Dakar Exchange: A New Generation of African Architects

Dakar Exchange was led by Abidjan-based architect Issa Diabaté and Dakar-based architect Jean-Charles Tall at the Collège Universitaire d’Architecture de Dakar and the Goethe-Institut in Dakar, Senegal. The exchange aimed to develop an African approach to global challenges posed by the age of hypermobility – an age that is mediated by digital technology, popular media, migration and remittances. Together with students, Diabaté and Tall researched the ideas and aspirations that West Africans bring back from their experiences abroad and explored their impact on the creation of new spaces in West Africa. The workshop focused on young people’s perception of dwelling, working and movement as an interconnected whole based on local ecosystems, climate, culture, technology and economy.
